Where an award has been made by the Compensation Board, the University should be free to discount wholly or partly the period of sick leave occasioned by the injury in calculating the employees future entitlement to sick pay, as they may see fit on consideration of all the material circumstances.

SICKNESS REPORTING PROCEDURE

FIRST DAY

If you are unable to attend work because of sickness, you must contact your immediate superior or other designated officer, by telephone or through some other person, at or shortly after the time you would normally start work on that day (normally not later than 1½ hours after normal start time). You must inform him/her of reason for your absence (not just "sick") and if possible, the probable period of absence.

FOURTH DAY

If the period of absence was estimated at three working days or less, but you are unable to return to work, you must notify your immediate superior or other designated officer of your continuing ill-health not later than the fourth working day of absence (preferably not later than 1½ hours after normal start time).

MORE THAN ONE WEEK

If you are sick for more than one week you must visit your doctor immediately and should submit a medical certificate to your immediate superior or their designated officer not later than the eighth consecutive calendar day of absence.

CONTINUING SICKNESS

Doctors Certificate must be submitted to your immediate superior or there designated officer for all periods of sickness, after the first week's absence, at the required intervals.

An absence of one week means continuous absence from work over a period of seven consecutive days which may include both working and non working days.

NOTE

It is very important that you comply with the regulations laid down. If you do not, there is every possibility that any allowances to which you are entitled will be delayed and could ultimately result in loss of sick pay.

Anyone who knowingly submits false information regarding their incapacity to work may render themselves liable to disciplinary action under the University Disciplinary Procedure.

CONTACT WITH INFECTIOUS DISEASES, ETC - PERSONS DEEMED TO BE INCAPABLE OF WORK

(a) An employee who in accordance with the National Insurance Act is prevented from attending his place of employment because of contact with infectious disease shall notify his direct supervisor immediately and shall be entitled to receive full pay less any benefits payable under the Act. A period of absence on this account shall not be reckoned against the employees entitlement to normal sick leave.

(b) In the case of contact with other infectious or contagious diseases the employee should not stay away from duty if they feel well, but should report the fact of contact to their direct supervisor.

REIMBURSEMENT OF COST OF DOCTOR'S STATEMENTS

Where for the purposes of qualifying for an allowance under this Scheme the Supervisor requires a doctor's statement from an employee, any cost incurred in obtaining such doctors' statements will be reimbursed.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION

The University may at any time require an employee to submit to an examination to a medical practitioner nominated by the University, subject to the provisions of the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988 where applicable. The Staff Health Physician of Sunderland Area Health Authority may from time to time be asked to carry out an independent examination of any employee. Any expenses incurred by such examinations will be incurred by the University

INDUSTRIAL INJURY

A period of absence due to injury sustained by an employee in the actual discharge of their duty and without their own default shall not be recorded for the purposes of this scheme.

An employee who is absent as a result of an accident shall not be entitled to an allowance if damages may be receivable from a third party in respect of such an accident. In this event, the University may, having regard to the circumstances of the case, advance to the employee, a sum not exceeding the sickness allowance provided under this scheme, subject to the employee undertaking to refund to the University the total amount of such allowances or the proportion thereof represented in the amount of damages received., Any period of absence in such a case where a refund of the moneys advanced is made in full, shall not be recorded for the purposes of the scheme. Where, however, the refund is made in part only, the University may at its discretion decide to what extent, if any, the period of absence may be so recorded.
