Univ of Sunderland APT&C Staff Handbook: ch02 Equal Oportunities policy statement

2. EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES PERSONNEL POLICY STATEMENT

The University of Sunderland is seeking to become an Equal Opportunities employer and is developing Equal Opportunities policies and practices. This statement indicates the University's commitment to promoting non-discriminatory policies and practices and to eliminating unfair discrimination on the grounds of disability, age, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, race, colour, ethnic origin and political belief.

To this end, it is proposed to concentrate on the following areas:-

Policy Development

Relevant Equal Opportunities issues will be taken into consideration whenever any policy is being formed or reviewed. Policies and practices will be regularly reviewed and changed to ensure that they are not actually or potentially unlawfully discriminatory. At all times the University will seek to implement the guidance contained in the Equal Opportunities Commission and Commission for Racial Equality Codes and Practice.

Personal Obligation

The University will ensure through training that all employees are aware of their personal and legal obligations to avoid discrimination. Behaviour and language contrary to the spirit of Equal Opportunities Policy will be discouraged. Failure of the individuals to observe the principles embodied in the policy may lead to disciplinary action.

Managerial Responsibility

The development of Equal Opportunities is regarded as an important managerial function and it is a manager's duty to ensure that his or her policies, procedures and employment practices accord with the University's Equal Opportunities Policy. Equal Opportunities will, therefore, form an important part of any management development programmes and working practices.

Recruitment and Selection

The University will carry out the recruitment process in such a way as to achieve as wide a field of suitably qualified candidates as possible, irrespective of their membership of any disadvantaged or under-represented group. All posts will be open to competition. Staff involved in the recruitment process will receive Equal Opportunities Training.

Access to Employment

The University will develop policies to improve access to employment for members of disadvantaged or under-represented groups, where they are suitably qualified.

The University will endeavour to improve access to, and facilities within, its buildings, for people with disabilities of any kind. As regards recruitment, all suitably qualified disabled candidates will be invited for interview.

Equal Value

The University will provide terms and conditions on an equal value basis to employees in similar situations.

The University will take seriously and will deal effectively with all complaints of discrimination. Any person employed by the University who makes a complaint regarding the operation of the policy will be encouraged to do so via the Grievance Procedure. Any other person who wishes to complain regarding the operation of the policy should address the complaint to the Director of Personnel, who will investigate the matter.

Monitoring and Review

The effectiveness of the Equal Opportunities Policy will be monitored and the policy will be jointly reviewed periodically with the Equal Opportunities Committee.
