***PAY NEWS FROM UNISONFOCUS ***

Victory hailed in higher education pay battle by Geoff Mason

FOLLOWING months of pressure from UNISON and the other education unions, a revised pay offer was made to staff in the higher education sector on Friday 10 January. The meeting had been arranged by ACAS.

The new offer, which forms a two-year deal, is a significant improvement on the original 1.5 per cent tabled and recognises the needs of low-paid employees in the sector.

The offer, declared "a victory for the workers" by UNISON negotiator, Steve Torrance from the University of Hull, is worth:

  • 2.9 per cent for all staff excluding manual and ancillary staff in the first year and a further 2.9 per cent in the second year, OR ELSE, the percentage increase in the headline Retail Price Figure (RPF) for March 1997, whichever is the higher.
  • 3.9 per cent for manual and ancillary staff in year one with a 3.4 per cent increase for year two OR ELSE the percentage increase in the headline RPF for March 1997 plus 0.5 per cent.

Elaine Harrison, UNISON head of higher education, said: "We are delighted with the continued commitment to national pay bargaining.

"We are sending out bulletins to all our branches and will be holding a special executive meeting to discuss whether to accept the offer."

All eight higher education unions are scheduled to meet on 24 January 1997 to consider the outcome of the individual consultation exercise.

The improved management offer follows the Goodbye to Goodwill campaign and the national day of action on 19 November 1996 which closed universities and higher education establishments throughout Britain and Northern Ireland.

***Pay rise to be paid in February salary!!!!!!***

The 2.9% pay rise to APT&C staff, 3.9% to Manual is to be paid with the February pay (for the monthly paid).

This is 1.4% higher than the offer rejected earlier last year, so...

Congratulations!

Congratulations to all of you who helped in this victory by striking in November.

Donations

The Branch will be pleased to receive donations to the Welfare Fund from those of you who have benefited from the day of action in November, but who were unable to take part in the strike.

Donations should be sent to the Honorary Treasurer at the Joint Union Office, Galen building

***Branch Meeting***

This is where the report of the Branch meeting should be...

BUT where were you!!!

We tried to hold the Annual General Meeting on 29 January but, as usual, very few of you could be bothered to turn up!

What would you have said, I wonder, if at that meeting we had voted to REJECT the Pay Offer???

***Training Courses***

I have been asked to remind people that there are half day COSHH training courses coming up soon. They are listed in the staff development handbook (6.5.11) as: COSHH Risk Assessment in the Laboratory. I understand that they have been re-scheduled for: 25th Feb, 4th March, 22nd April, and 1st May

There's also Manual Handling in Practice (6.5.10). The manual lifting may be appropriate to all sorts of people (although I think they should have been assessed as needing it). This could include obviously porters/caretakers, drivers but also I strongly suspect many others including at least some - if not all - library assistants.

The important thing is that these are short and more practically orientated - something we have needed for some time.
